How to wear a bralette this V-day

By Bonnie Wilson

This romantic trend can we a fashion risk for some gals... so we're sharing our tips for showing off your bralette this V-day.

1.  Choose the style that best supports your bust. If you're 'blessed in the bust', you'll need a style with a little more under band support and traditional straps. Try a racer back style

2.  Choose a top with a v-neck, boat neck, off shoulder or open back. Let just a little of the bralette peek out... the strap is classy

3.  Contrast colors! If you're wearing a black top, try a blush or wine bralette. If you're wearing grey... anything goes... but we love blush and grey together. Ivory and white bralettes can we the hardest to pair because they look just like a regular bra.

My journey into the issue human trafficking began with a film 12 years ago. I watched the TV movie human trafficking and was so broken by this heinous act that I cried the whole night through.

Soon after I left my job in the media to work for The Salvation Army. I became engaged with their local fundraising groups … we raised enough money to help establish the safe house Deborah's Gate, which is operated The Salvation Army in British Columbia to this very day. To learn more about Deborah's Gate click here

When I started my business in 2011, I decided that Betty Be Good would influence others for good by raising awareness about human trafficking as well as giving 2% of sales to clothe survivors of trafficking.

Last month another film broke my heart and I was so moved once again that I just had to share it with others.

SOLD is the story of Lakshmi, a child lured from Nepal to a gritty brothel-prison called  House in Kolkata, India. Through this extraordinary girl's story, this film addresses sex-trafficking head on and exposes the ugly truth that children are among those exploited. Globally millions of children go missing and the average age of a trafficked girl is thirteen.

The film was exceptional, but difficult to watch especially because I have a seven year old daughter of my own. I nearly had to leave the theatre and then I remembered that all I have to do is watch. Others have lived this horror. Others are living it right now.

It's hard to imagine such a brutal and evil reality in our world. As you read this blog post more than 5 million people are victims of human trafficking worldwide. This film is an echo of heroism and courage amid an organized crime epidemic only second to drug trafficking in profits.

These past few weeks promoting this film have been exciting. Many of you have so kindly donated tickets so others may see the film. You know who you are and we are so grateful for your kindness.

At the screening we were so blessed to hear from local organizations in Whatcom County who are affecting change and helping survivors of human trafficking.

Lea Newcomb of Engedi Ministries shared her heart for helping sex-trafficking survivors with a six bed safe-house providing resources and a new start for women who have been lured into prostitution.  Even with their incredible work, sadly Ann shared that they have to turn away 60 girls a year because of lack of resources. To learn more about Engedi Ministries click here.

Another wonderful group who shared at our screening was Hope 4 Justice from Christ The King Church. Sue Ann Huetink shared that their groups focus is awareness and they organize events and programs to reach at-risk teens in the high schools. To learn more about Hope 4 Justice click here

We had a very special and courageous speaker Sarah share her own personal story of trafficking. Sarah gave a personal face to the issue and her strength to overcome was an inspiration to all at the screening.

I've heard many people say that this problem seems so huge how can we even make a dent in the solution? I have two thoughts to share on this... How do you swallow an elephant? You don't... You take one bite at a time... So think about how you can take small steps that lead to huge gains. Affect one person, then another. Even if you only help one person you are making a huge difference.

Remember that a problem this big needs a bigger God. We ended the evening with a beautiful, heartfelt prayer by Erin Clark from Village Church. She prayed that we would not rest in brokenness from the pain of this film but that we would be motivated to act. Act on the tuggings of our hearts. For each of us this is different. But don't ignore those tuggings. They lead you to God's purpose for your life.

Lastly, as the film crew and Producers have shared at each screening, we #dareyoutobethelight because light casts out darkness. To learn more about the film SOLD visit:

Your spring vacay is booked and now you're dreaming of icy cocktails and sandy beaches, but before you get too dreamy start thinking about that you'll want to pack on this exciting vacation.

Warmer climates always call for a lovely sundress.  When I travel I usually pack 4-5 dresses.  I love wearing my bikini under a pretty sundress for the perfect breezy look that allows me to enjoy the beach or pool in a pinch.

These bright tones fit in perfectly in warm tropical climates, especially after a day or two in the sun. Coral lace trim sundress, $39.50, lace inset slip dress lemon & coral $44.50.

This floral halter dress transitions from daytime excursions to evening dining & dancing. $44.50

Tie dye is an edgy tropical print and this tunic with double pockets is an ideal, packable style that doubles as an easy bathing suit cover up. Available in heather grey olive green, and charcoal/black, $39.50

A cute little romper makes an adorable style to slip on when the wether is hot. This stone washed romper has an over knot tie up back and lace trim on the shorts for a romantic, yet easy going style. Wear with a bikini or bandeau bra. $44.50

Give the cold shoulder to colder climates!  This lovely peasant top has lace accents on the shoulders with a contrast mixed print hem for an adorable top on your spring break vacay.  Pair with white capri's or shorts and you're positively adorable! $39.50

Take along the perfect cardi for a day at the beach!  This fringed, bell sleeve cardigan is accented with crochet and lace. In a nice bright white, you'll be a stunner once the tan sets in! $49.50

Unapolgetically Romantic

Our Bettie's have always been a little romantic... our lace accents, sexy silhouettes and healthy dose of pink practically makes it V'day all through the year, but I love this occasion to really unapolgetically turn up the romance.

What better way to bring the heat but in a little red dress, just like this one. The gathered waistband is ultra flattering on this classic design that hits right above the knee. Just the right about of flirt and plenty for the imagination. Gathered Waist Dress, $44.50

An easy way to add the romance is with this Chantilly lace kimono cardi. The bell sleeves and scalloped edge finish is so pretty you'll have to pinch yourself! Lace Kimono Cardi, $39.50

How about the sweetheart line of this terry top with lace vowel neckline and sleeve. We say black for some vavavavoom! Cowel Neck Top, $39.50

When you're just casually romantic, you're never forgettable in this slouchy heathered cardi with lace accent and dolman sleeve. Lace Cardi, $39.50

Think pink with a basic that's perfectly darling accented by a sequin graphic declaration of love. Romance Top, $34.50.

Footwear and accesories inspire a little love especially with this spicy red lace up ballet flat, blushing lace scarf or flirty jewerly that says it all. Ballet fats $29.50, lace scarf $16.50, 'Taken' necklace $12.50 & 'Love' earrings $12.50.

First Bloom

We've waited all winter to see the first bloom. When we catch a glimpse of it's vibrant color we're hopeful the long winter is nearly over. I'm not an avid gardener, so you'll know I'm not talking flowers but about the colors of spring fashion.

This season will not disappoint those who love the romance of blush and peach or the sophistication of periwinkle and seaside blue. Let's not forsake buttercup and mustard yellow making a splash and for the especially bold, crimson red.

Some of our favorite new styles are classic, romantic, wearable, layerable and totally transitional from winter to spring.

Here's a peek at our top picks for Spring 2016.

Fabulous For The Holidays

It's the season of sparkle and shine, and we're looking forward to all the fun ways we celebrate Christmas. It's time to start planning how you'll want to look for each occasion.

Whether your look is a comfy cardigan to snuggle up by the fire, a practical vest to shop for the perfect Christmas tree or a fancy style for the company Christmas party, Betty shares her picks that will make you jolly this season.

All Night Long

You've got an invite to the company Christmas party...lucky you! A fancy night out is just the way to start the holidays and you've got to look breath-taking. We've hand picked some lovely pieces that are perfect accents to your look with just the right amount of sparkle and sass.

Into The Woods

It's a family tradition... everyone bundles up and ventures into the woods to pick the perfect Christmas tree. Of course you'll want to be wearing an ensemble of practical perfection. We suggest a vest layered with a plaid button up which pairs perfectly with your Hunter boots.

Snuggled By The Fire

You'll likely be spending plenty of quiet time by the fire whether entertaining friends for a potluck dinner or simply watching a classic Christmas movie - we suggest Home Alone (it's the 25th anniversary of the film this year).

These looks are snuggable, comfortable and always affordable!

In whatever you're doing to celebrate the holidays, may you be merry and bright.  Wishing you a wonderful, restful and delightful Christmas season.

xoxo, Betty

Tasteful In Tropics

By Suzanne Smith
on June 21, 2015

Palm leaves, hibiscus flowers and birds of paradise... they tend to remind us of the tacky styles found at souvenir shops in Hawaii and other warm vacations spots. When the tropical trend made it's move this season I didn't exactly dig out my beach sarong with excitement.

The current take on the tropical trend is tasteful with modern details in the mix such as lace accents, pom pom trim and figure flattering cuts.

Truly tasteful in cut, this mandarin collar blouse is a bright coral tropical print with plenty of green to balance it.

A more youthful take on this print is this top with crochet accent in the back. We would pair this with a cute bandeau or bathing suit top and cut off denim shorts.

We love short shorts with unique trim like these tulip fold over shorts in tropical print. Pair these with a sporty wrap style bathing suit top for a sexy look at the beach or poolside.

This tunic dress is a unique tropical print with a black base for extra pop of the vibrant shades of magenta, yellow and blue. We love the addition of the braided belt and the classic mandarin collar.

The tropical print is always beach or BBQ ready so we're loving the new take on an old trend.

What To Pack | Summer Style

As I'm planning my summer vacay's I'm starting to think about what I want to pack on my camping trips, beach getaways and festival weekenders.

There's always a need for new shorts, tank tops, a warm cardi for cool nights and a sundress... something to throw over my bathing suit ... and of course new swimwear!

Lately I'm crushing over short shorts in fun vibrant prints, like these adorable pom pom shorts with high waistband and tulip features. In aztec or trendy palm leaf, they're both ready for the  beach. Just top with your bikini!

My next addiction in the shorts category are board shorts and these leopard print vented shorts will do the trick. We're thinking basic black bikini or a graphic tee in black for a rock star surf look.

Tank tops are an easy breezy style for any summer vacay! Wear with leggings, jean cut offs or capri's. Our new graphic collection ranges from muscle tees to wide arm tanks that leave room for a bandeau bra peek-a-boo.

When sitting by the camp fire or cheering on your fav band at an outdoor show, I'm always glad I packed a cute  warm up like this aztec knit cardi with fringe detail.

My fail-safe style for any occasion from strolling a farmers market to dining out on a patio is a cute sundress. We love these adorable prints with unique detail in the back.

Lastly, a new bikini is always a must have... and these two-way bikini's are just the right styling when playing beach volleyball, wake boarding or just sunbathing poolside.

Hope you have a safe and fun summer vacation and I hope you'll take Betty with you!

Forget The Rules... if you like it, wear it!

By Suzanne Smith
on April 21, 2015

I grew up believing in certain fashion rules... Match your handbag to your shoes, never wear pink with red, stripes add bulk and pack away your white jeans after labor day.

As I discovered my own sense of style I realized a freedom in mismatching my patterns, wearing bold colors and creating a unique style that was all my own. Quite often I meet girls who come into the boutique with their own rules. Usually they say 'I can't wear that color' or ' I don't do ruffles' or they ask 'can i wear that together? or 'can I wear that at my age?' (I hate that one) so I say... why not!

Let's forget the rules! If you like it, wear it! Let's liberate each other to wear whatever we want. Wouldn't it be great if all of us  rejected norms, rules and barriers? Why don't we start by taking a style challenge for the next seven days. I'm suggesting two practical ideas:

1. Every day wear something that scares you. Take a fashion risk... Small or big... Preferably big. Even if it's just rolling the cuffs up on your pants... If that's a risk for you, do it!

2. Be kind to others who are taking fashion risks. Don't look down on them if something isn't a perfect match or if their style isn't your choice. Honor the person for taking a risk.

3. Encourage others! Once a day compliment someone who is pushing the envelope or someone who has put extra effort into their look that day.

Our team at the boutique has been taking a fashion challenge for the month of April.  You might have noticed us mixing prints, wearing new colors and trying new styles. Has it been easy? No way! Personally I've felt strange every time I've left the house, but it's liberating and it builds confidence.

The whole time I've wanted to wear a sign on my back that say, "Go easy on me, I'm trying new things", but at the end of the day people have been gracious and complimentary so it's a new method of style for me.

We hope all our Bettie's will join us and have fun doing it too!

Betty Shares The Love Celebrating Our First Birthday!

By Suzanne Smith
on November 15, 2014
With 0 comments

In celebration of our first birthday... Betty created a kindness campaign called Share The Love. We're distributing eighty bracelets embossed with LOVE. Store owner Suzanne Smith says, “We wanted to do something to give back the love this community has shown us. We opened our first boutique just a year ago and we’re so excited about the success of the store at Birch Bay Square.”

Smith says she was terrified when embarking on a bricks and mortar location after starting her business online just shy of three years ago. “A store was never part of the plan, but I love it. After we opened it soon became clear that our fashions were exactly what local gals were looking for and everyone loved the value too,” Smith says.

The bracelets are a pay it forward concept. We're awarding them to shoppers throughout the month of October. Each one comes with a card that instructs the shopper to wear the bracelet and give it away to a person who deserves a little love. Smith says, “Some girls love the bracelet so much they’re saying it will be hard to part with it. But the whole idea is to give love away. Our purpose is to bring encouragement to the community."

Tell us about how you shared the love with your bracelet by emailing us at For more information about the boutique visit

Country Chic | Fall '14

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.

I can't help but get a little excited about the crisp, fresh air of fall. There's a spring in my step as life returns to normal. So long lazy summer... hello focussed fall... a new schedule and a fresh outlook.

Just about this time of year, I'm ready to pack up my summer wardrobe and gear up for a cozy new collection. Betty's Country Chic look is just what I'm dreaming of as we plan our visits to the pumpkin patch, our after school playdates and reunions of friends and family back from summer vacation.

This season, there's an obvious inspiration of down-home fashion... somewhat casual, somewhat dressy. This curious mingle is what makes this collection so interesting... it's plaid with dressy accessories, denim layered on with faux fur and fancy joggers with heels!

Trend Alert: Knit Accents & Layers

By Suzanne Smith
on August 09, 2014

Moving into fall we're definitely seeing accents of knit as details on just about anything from jackets to footwear.  I have always loved layers of knits... I imagine myself playing among the fallen leaves in an oversized sweater dress, knit leggings, boot socks and a pair of cute booties. Reality... I'm raking them up in my yard and just when I'm done my kids jump in and mess them all up. More work ahead, but at least my outfit is cute!

The knit sleeves on Danika's Denim Vest Hoody are an adorable touch and a new take on the jean jacket. Try it out with Jacquie's Dressy Jogger and knit trimmed combat boots for a cozy carefree look.

I'm truly loving this seasons' knits when mixed with lace accents like with Lorie's Lace Patch Sweater.  Especially when you see a boyfriend sweater and a pop of romance on the sides or the back in lace accents.

Another adorable compliment to knit is leather or suede accents.  We love the shearling suede-like vest built in to Shawna's Shearling Sweater Coat with knit sleeves and back.

Crochet accents are bringing a retro hippie vibe to basic sweaters like Bree's Blanket Trim Cardigan. We love this layered on with a basic v-neck, dark skinnies and riding boots.

And let's not overlook the Blanket Sweater... the must-have of the season! These oversized adorable cardigans are reminiscent of tribal blankets worn by the earthy ladies of the 70's. The current twist uses unique prints like houndstooth as in Hannah's Houndstooth Blanket Sweater
