Pretty Pastels
Posted on February 08 2012
If one side of the color trend spectrum for Spring 2012 was in-your-face brights and graphic prints, the other side (and there is always another side) was something much more pretty, subtle, and sweet: pastels.
Pastel looks from the 3.1 Phillip Lim, Ralph Lauren and Prada Spring 2012 collections
Consider it a paler take on the ubiquitous colorblocking trend. More is more—think light pink plus mint green plus daffodil, ad infinitum—and you won’t even have to sport sunglasses before checking yourself out in the mirror.
Jason Wu’s pale pinks kicked off the trend in a ladylike way, while Tibi and Christian Siriano’s sherbet shades were a bit more youthful.
Ralph Lauren looked to the ‘20s for his Daisy Buchanan-worthy pastels, which came in silky trousers, blouses, and the sweetest of florals.
If Phillip Lim’s collection was a little more sharp in silhouette, it was just as soft in shades: pale orange, lavender, cotton candy pink, and the lightest yellow-green. He also offered a more wearable take on the trend: ultra light-wash denim in a perfect powder-blue.
New York embraced the look, but it’s made its way to Milan as well, where Prada’s fabulous spring show offered Easter-best sweet pleated dresses and skirts in saccharine florals (Don’t worry, Miuccia hasn’t gone soft—she countered the sweetness with muscle car motifs).
Girly girls: this one's totally for you. But even those tough types might find something to love here. After all, the only thing that could be more subversive than black leather is head-to-toe pastels, no?
